A civil servant, Dr Quraishi was the 17th Chief Election Commissioner of India. He revolutionized voter participation in India. For this and other electoral reforms he figured in 100 Most Powerful Indians of 2011 and 2012 by The Indian Express. He has delivered lectures on democracy and elections worldwide. He observed elections in South Africa, Russia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and most recently in Pakistan, among others. He is on the Board of Advisors of International IDEA (Institute of Democracy and Electoral Assistance) Stockholm. He has been appointed Global Ambassador of Democracy alongside eminent leaders like Kofi Annan. He contributed significantly in the health sector as DG National AIDS Control Organization and Special Secretary Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, dealing with AIDS, TB and Malaria. His book Social Marketing for Social Change (1996) broke new ground in health and development communication.

He serves on the board of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership Board (RBM), Asia Pacific Leader’s Malaria Alliance (APLMA), and Foundation for Disease Elimination and Control of India (FDEC-India). He also serves as the Chairman of the Board of Sun Pharma Health Care Society. He is serving as the Acting Director of the Malaria Elimination Demonstration Project. He has served as the Director of FDA India Office, Technical Director, Decade of Vaccines Collaboration, Chief Executive Officer, Hilleman Laboratories, U.S. Health Attache and Regional Representative for South Asia at the U.S. Embassy in India, and Chief Malaria Vaccine Section at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, GA. He has experience, interest, and knowledge of Discovery, Development, Delivery, and Diplomacy in biomedical sciences and public health. He has over thirty-years’ experience in infectious disease research, vaccines and immunization, biotechnology, global health, product safety, and policy matters. Dr. Lal has worked towards building bilateral and multilateral partnerships, which has led to significant growth and collaborations at academic, institutional, industry and government levels.
